Cost of Employing a Worker in Brazil

The cost of employing a worker in Brazil is higher than the monthly gross salary. Employers must budget for statutory charges, annual entitlements, benefits, payroll administration and potential collective-bargaining requirements.

Main components of employment cost

  • Gross salary: the contractual monthly remuneration.
  • Employer social-security contributions: rates vary according to the employer’s tax and activity profile.
  • FGTS: a monthly deposit generally calculated on remuneration.
  • Thirteenth salary: an additional annual salary paid in installments.
  • Paid vacation: annual leave plus the constitutional one-third allowance.
  • Benefits: transportation, meal, health, insurance and other benefits may apply.
  • Payroll and compliance: calculations, government filings, medical requirements and document management.

Why there is no single percentage

The total depends on the industry, tax regime, workplace-risk classification, employee location, collective bargaining agreement, compensation mix and benefits. For this reason, a reliable cost model must be calculated role by role.

Illustrative budgeting method

Start with twelve months of salary. Add the thirteenth salary, vacation allowance, monthly statutory charges, recurring benefits and payroll administration. Then model variable compensation, hiring costs and a reasonable provision for termination exposure. The result should be converted into a monthly fully loaded cost for management decisions.

Employment through a local entity

A Brazilian company can employ workers directly, but it must maintain payroll registrations, labor documentation, tax payments, accounting records and government filings. GESCON’s Accounting and BPO in Brazil team integrates payroll with accounting and compliance.

Employment through an EOR

Companies without a local entity can use an Employer of Record in Brazil. The EOR becomes the local employer and manages contracts, payroll, statutory charges and filings while the client directs day-to-day work.

Questions to answer before making an offer

  1. Where will the employee work?
  2. Which collective agreement applies?
  3. Will compensation include bonus or commission?
  4. Which benefits are mandatory or commercially expected?
  5. Will the worker be hired by an entity or an EOR?
  6. What is the expected termination exposure?
